Shrewsbury Castle

Shrewsbury Castle - Present.jpg

The Castle is one of the oldest, if not THE oldest building in all of Shrewsbury, with William The Conqueror ordering it's construction in 1067 - almost 1000 YEARS AGO!

Built at the very heart of Shrewsbury, The castle has seen many different historical moments over the years - it was even briefly captured during the Welsh Wars, meaning Shrewsbury was part of Wales for a short time!

The original castle was built out of wood, with walls also being built around the castle and the subsequent town that began to grow around it in order to keep everyone living there safe. However, during the Welsh Wars, the castle was burned to the ground by raiders! In order to stop this from happening again, the castle and town walls were rebuilt out of sandstone around 1300, which created the buildings that we see today!

Whilst extensions, additions and repairs have been carried out on the castle numerous times throughout it's history, the building and it's walls have changed very little since their sandstone construction. Instead, it's the town of Shrewsbury that has surrounded the castle that has changed and grown over the years. As more people moved to the area to sell their goods and be protected by the castle's walls, the town became more and more wealthy, and thus became bigger still as a consequence!
